The Chinese name for BIS-TRIS propane is 1,3-bis (tris (hydroxymethyl) methylamino) propane, CAS number 64431-96-5. It appears as a white crystalline powder and is similar to TRIS buffer because it is also a derivative of TRIS biological buffer.

Bis Tris propane is a zwitterionic buffer primarily used in biochemistry and molecular biology. Because it has two pKa values of similar size, with a first-order acid dissociation constant Pka1=6.8 and a second-order acid dissociation constant Pka2=9.0, it exhibits a very wide buffering range, approximately between pH 6.3-9.5. It is precisely because of its broad buffering capacity that the pH can be as low as 6-7, making it more suitable than Tris buffer to improve the stability and activity of restriction endonucleases. It is also one of the widely used reagents in the TRIS series products.
