Disodium EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium) is a chelating anticoagulant widely used in vacuum blood collection tubes. Its anticoagulant principle is to form stable chelates by binding with calcium ions in the blood, removing the necessary free calcium ions during the coagulation process, thereby effectively preventing blood clotting.
Sodium EDTA is a white crystalline powder that is easily soluble in water and stable at room temperature. It has a minimal impact on the morphology of blood cells and is particularly suitable for hematological tests such as whole blood count, blood routine examination, glycated hemoglobin measurement, and blood type identification. Purple blood collection tubes are usually treated with EDTA anticoagulant for clinical identification.
It should be noted that disodium EDTA is not suitable for coagulation tests and platelet function tests as it can interfere with fibrin clot formation.
