Biological buffer BES (N, N-bis (2-hydroxyethyl) -2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is one of the "Good's buffers" developed by Good in the 1960s. It is a zwitterionic buffer and CAS number 10191-18-1. Its effective buffering range is pH 6.4-7.8, with a pKa of 7.1 at 25 ° C, which is very close to physiological pH. BES has high water solubility and is not easily able to penetrate cell membranes, with minimal interference to biochemical reactions. It is commonly used in cell culture, diagnostic reagent production, and as a key buffer for transfection of calcium phosphate DNA complexes into eukaryotic cells.
