Sarcosine oxidase (EC. 1.5.3.1, SOX) belongs to the flavoprotein oxidase class, with FAD as a cofactor, which can catalyze the oxidation-reduction of N-methyl in sarcosines. It is one of the key enzymes for detecting creatinine levels in serum or urine and is widely used in the field of medical diagnosis.

Creatinine is catalyzed by creatine amide hydrolase to produce creatine, which is then hydrolyzed into creatine and urea by creatine kinase. Creatine is then catalyzed by creatine oxidase to produce glycine, formaldehyde, and hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide, 2,4,6-triiodo-3-hydroxybenzoic acid, and 4-aminoantipyrine react under peroxidase catalysis to produce a purple red compound. In the field of clinical diagnosis, this enzyme is often used in combination with creatine kinase and creatine kinase to complete the detection of creatinine.
