MOPS (3-methylpropanesulfonic acid) is a widely used zwitterionic biological buffer in life science research, with a molecular weight of approximately 209.3 and a CAS number of 1132-61-2. The effective pH range of this buffer is 6.5-7.9, with a pKa value of 7.2 at 25 ºC, which is close to physiological pH and suitable for research in near neutral environments. MOPS is easily soluble in water and has extremely low interactions with most metal ions, making it suitable for metal ion related research. It is used as a standard buffer in RNA denaturing electrophoresis, and is also widely used in cell culture medium, protein purification, chromatography, Bis Tris protein gel electrophoresis and other fields.

Mops is a kind of biological buffer, which is often used to prepare RNA electrophoresis buffer.

(1) Using 41.8g MOPS and dissolving it into approximately 700mLDEPC treated water;
(2) Adjusting its pH to 7.0 using 2N NaOH;
(3) Add 20 mL of DEPC-treated 1MNaOAC and 20 mL of 0.5MEDTA (pH 8.0) to the solvent;
(4) Set the volume to 1L, filter through the impurities using a 0.45μm membrane and store the final extracted solvent at room temperature and away from light.
Because MOPS is chemically stable, the Pka value is stable and has no toxic non-permeable effect on organisms. It does not react chemically with many chemical test.It does not react chemically with many chemical agents and has no complexing ability with metal cations.
