Carbomer 940, also known as Carbomer 940 in English, is a white fluffy powder; Characteristic slight odor; It has strong hygroscopicity and is a polymer obtained by copolymerization with acrylic acid as a monomer, sucrose ether of acrylic acid or allyl ether of pentaerythritol as a crosslinking agent. It often exists in acidic form in water and is prone to swelling in polar organic solvents such as ethanol and glycerol.
Product name | Carbomer |
CAS | 9007-20-9 |
use to | Thickener, used in cosmetics, personal care products, etc |
advantage | Excellent stability and liquidity |
1. Cabo 940 is white and loose in shape; It has acidity, hygroscopicity, and a slight special odor, and is soluble in water, ethanol, and glycerol. The commonly used concentration is 0.1% to 3.0%. Due to the large amount of carboxyl groups in its molecules, aqueous solutions should be used with special attention after being neutralized with alkali to reduce irritation to the skin and mucous membranes. The neutralizing agent of Cabo 940 can be sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, potassium bicarbonate, borax, amino acids, and polar organic amines such as triethanolamine.
2. The water swelling ability of carbomer mainly depends on the cross-linking density of the polymer. If the cross-linking density is too high, it will cause water molecules to not smoothly diffuse into the interior of the polymer particles, carbomer cannot fully swell, cannot be uniformly dispersed in water, and even cause layering; If the crosslinking density is too low, although its water swelling property is excellent, its gel degree will be reduced, resulting in a decline in thickening effect.
3. The light transmittance of Cabom is also closely related to its water solubility. Generally, the better its water solubility, the higher its light transmittance. The level of crosslinking density is generally measured by measuring the water absorption rate of Carbomer. Generally, the higher the water absorption rate, the lower the crosslinking density. As the amount of crosslinking agent increases, the wetting time gradually increases, the transmittance gradually decreases, and the water absorption gradually decreases.
